Collection consists mainly of personal correspondence with McMurray's mother, Charlotte, during the years he was a student, an officer, and superintendent of the Maritime College. Correspondents also include C.T. Durgin and A.H. Caesar. Collection includes typewritten manuscripts describing life at sea aboard the schoolship ST. MARY'S; his voyages around the world; the people he met in his travels; and the mystery and enchantment he perceived throughout the Pacific from Hawaii to China.

Calvin Thornton Durgin was born January 7, 1893, in Palmyra, New Jersey. He served as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations from May 1949 to March 1950, and retired as a vice admiral in September 1951.
